Minutes by Bobby Davis, Coordinator
Announcements: I welcomed everyone to our May meeting and thanked Susan McSwiney for being our gracious host. Sadly, I had to inform our members that the “Nashville Comes To Charlotte” event scheduled for May 14th was cancelled. A scheduling conflict had arisen for some of the Publisher’s and forced the cancellation. However, NSAI Headquarters is looking at Fall to reschedule the event. All those who had signed up and paid should have received a refund.
Additionally, I covered the upcoming Song Camp and Advanced Song Camp which will both be taking place in July. To close out my announcements, I covered some administrative details. In conversation with our POC, Trinia, at NSAI Headquarters, there are several paperwork requirements that we will submit on a monthly basis in addition to our minutes. 1) monthly attendance roster 2) a song consent form. Rather than explain the consent form, I read it aloud to the group. From now on every NSAI Chapter is required to have everyone who presents or performs a song or poem or instrumental to fill out this form. No exceptions. Our Charlotte Chapter abides by NSAI Headquarters guidelines in order to protect everyone.
For future reference the form reads as follows:
“NSAI thanks you for participating in our programs and services. We are one of the few organizations that take time to listen and evaluate your songs. Due to legal considerations, we require you to sign a consent form any time NSAI hears your song (whether it be through the Song Evaluation Service, Pitch to Publisher Night, Feedback Night, One on One Counseling or any one of NSAI’s special events and services). Your submission of a song (whether lyric or instrumental only or music and lyrics) for feedback by NSAI constitutes your agreement to release, indemnify and hold harmless NSAI and its employees, board of directors, officers, attorneys, agents, and representatives from and against any claim, including, without limitation, of copyright infringement or other misappropriation, arising from any acts or omissions in connection with your submission.”
Misty had the honor of introducing our “Special Guest” for the evening, legendary singer, songwriter, activist, Si Kahn. However, before she did she reminded everyone that Fiona, our Co-Coordinator, was performing at EagleSpeak’s Open Mic that Thursday. Yeah!!! And our member Laura Rabell would be performing her own show there on Wednesday, June 1st at 7:00 p.m.
We than turned what ended up being a very interesting and entertaining evening over to the very talented Si Kahn. Si spoke to our group about how he turned the hobby of songwriting into a profession, how to continue to come up with diverse song ideas, whether you should write music or lyrics first or both together, and the song contest he is teaming up with NSAI Charlotte to do. Not only will you get your song, picture, and link to your website on an international website just for simply participating. If you are in our group and win you will get a certificate and $250.00. You will be writing about the Protection of Bristol Bay, www.MusiciansUnited.info. We, along with Si Kahn will be putting together an email post about this song contest and getting it to you through email, our NSAICharlotte.com website and NSAICharlotte Face Book. Si then played the song he wrote for the protection of Bristol Bay, which was a funny song, but still got the message across. Members were allowed to asked questions. Si then gave everyone one of his CD’s for free which was very gracious of him! Additionally, he stayed and provided great feedback during our Song Critique session. Si told us he was impressed with the songs he heard, as we are each month!
Next month is our popular, kick off to Summer Song Circle, so we look forward to seeing you on Tuesday, June 14th. At our last Song Circle we had 20 performers! If you have never been to one, I highly recommend it!!!! Also, if you want your song’s critiqued…bring 25 copies of your lyrics.
Our group just keeps getting bigger and better…what can I say, but it “All Begins With a Song”!!!!
Your Coordinators, Bobby, Fiona, Misty, Julie
